Weekends

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

It seems to be quite common that I either have nothing to do on the weekend, or way too much stuff to do.

This weekend was one of the latter, with friday and saturday night dances at the San Francisco Lindy Exchange, and sunday at the Art Deco Society’s annual Gatsby picnic.

And, of course, tons of photoshop work to be done, because I took my camera to all three events. Add in some studying for my Japanese course tomorrow, and I am basically dead on my feet. Or would be if I wasn’t sitting in a chair.

I also managed to come up with a witty saying in conversation; Saturday night at the dance, my friend Sharon was mentioning how many single women there were at the dance, and I said on the spur of the moment “I’m good at flirting, but not at converting,” which would be even funnier if it wasn’t so painfully true.

Photos coming up over the next few days…

Barbary Ball 2008

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Thursday night I drove up to San Francisco to go dancing at the 9:20 Special. This is something I rarely do, even though it’s probably the best weekly dance in the Bay Area – I’m a big wimp and like to be in bed by 9:30 at night during the week.

But I made the drive because George Gee and his band were in town from New York.

And. I. Had. A. Blast. It’s been years since I’ve had that much fun dancing. There’s something about dancing to an honest-to-goodness Big Band…

Frankie Manning leading the Shim Sham

I’m back from spending the weekend in Oakland at the Frankie Manning weekend. Photos are up on my Flickr page.

I have to admit that I skipped a few of the classes in order to go back to my hotel and sleep; I’m so out of shape. Contrast this to Frankie in the photo above, leading the dance at age 94. I suck. :)

Building Condemned signI have a multitude of excuses why I don’t get things done… Procrastination; laziness; sleepyness; computer games…

Tonight I can add a new one. I went out to Sunnyvale’s weekly Lindy Hop dance, but did not get to dance because the building was condemned.

Apparently, the area the building was in was re-zoned, and it didn’t meet fire codes for its new zoning. The fire marshalls showed up a few hours before the dance, slapped “No Trespassing – Condemned” signs on all the entrances, and mentioned that “anyone entering the building would be arrested.”

Stepping Out

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

My friend Larry just got a new digital camera. He brought it to the dance at Stepping Out last week, and as a result, I have a few new photos of myself dancing :)
